Tororo Municipality has been selected as one of 19 local governments across Uganda to host a proposed One-Stop Service Center, part of a government initiative to consolidate public services and improve accessibility for citizens.
Cabinet approved the establishment of 19 such centers, code-named Service Uganda Centers (SUCs), in 2019. The centers are planned for key regional zones including Kampala, Mbarara, Fort Portal, and Gulu, among others.
The centers will bring together services from multiple ministries, departments, and agencies, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Uganda Revenue Authority, Ministry of Public Service, Uganda Investment Authority, Ministry of Education, and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau.
Through this initiative, the government aims to enhance citizen satisfaction by delivering efficient, cost-effective services while improving government accessibility, visibility, and credibility.
The centres are also expected to strengthen the fight against corruption and support the implementation of national, regional, and international policy frameworks.
Speaking at Tororo Municipal Council Chambers, Lebron Ahimbisibwe, a Senior Management Analyst at the Ministry of Public Service, said Tororo, along with Mbarara and Gulu, will receive World Bank funding for their centers, making them distinct from other zonal centres.
In the Bukedi Zone, the center will be located at the Posta Uganda Building in Tororo Town, consolidating several government departments under one roof.
Staff from participating agencies will be deployed to handle public inquiries and grievances efficiently.
Ahimbisibwe called on all stakeholders to cooperate with the Ministry of Public Service and provide the necessary support for the success of the initiative.
Currently, the initiative is being piloted in Kasese and Hoima Districts, with lessons from these centers guiding implementation in Tororo and other regions.
Tororo Municipality officials welcomed the development. Deputy Town Clerk Okoth R. Kitong said the selection aligns with the government’s decentralization goals and enhances service delivery, while Senior Physical Planner Gorret Odoi noted that the center is expected to boost business activity and attract investment to Tororo Town.
